Bills sign Olympic gold medalist wrestler with zero prior football experience
In their pursuit of free agents, the Buffalo Bills are searching far and wide.
Gable Steveson, a gold medal winning wrestler who has never played organized football, was signed by the team on Friday.
In the 125 kg weight class, Steveson took home the gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics.
The Bills and he are now testing his mat abilities on the football field.
On August 6, 2021, at the Makuhari Messe in Tokyo, Gable Steveson celebrated after the men's freestyle 125 kg wrestling event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
I have had the privilege of competing at the highest level of my sport, but I am excited about the prospect of testing the limits of my wrestling abilities on the football field
Steveson stated in a statement issued by his agent, Carter Chow. For this chance, I am appreciative to Coach Sean McDermott, GM Brandon Beane, and the Buffalo Bills organization.
Head coach McDermott was a two-time national champion in high school wrestling while Steveson was a player in Pennsylvania.
