"I Absolutely Despised...": Dustin's Actor Reflects On Filming Eddie's Death

Gaten Matarazzo says he struggled to create the perfect emotional performance for Eddie Munson's season 4 death.

Matarazo has played Hawkins youngster Dustin Henderson in Netflix's hit sci-fi series since 2016, when he and his friends get involved in superhero, monster, and other dimension conspiracies.

In Stranger Things season 4, Dustin befriends Joseph Quinn's Eddie Munson, the high school's D&D club's metalhead leader accused of a string of mysterious murders.

While filming Stranger Things season 5, Matarazzo discusses season 4's production at a FanExpo Dallas panel with co-stars Quinn and Caleb MacLaughlin,

Matarazzo praises Munson's participation in the latest season and Quinn's acting, but confesses weariness prevented him from reacting emotionally to Eddie's death.

However, a later filming occasion gave him the motivation to reshoot Eddie's final sequence. See Matarazzo's memory below:

That character's first intention was to have that arc and have that tunnel through everything because it's such a wonderful way for the plot to take off for the Scooby-Doo group, the Hawkins gang.

It was a novel approach to learn about Vecna and Henry. So cool. Joe's great onscreen. He probably improvised "I love you, man." He covered well, so I suppose that was him.
