Shakira Prevents Jail Time With Tax Fraud Settlement

The "Waka Waka" singer was accused of tax evasion in 2018, according to The Guardian, after it was discovered through an investigation that she had evaded paying $13 million in taxes.

From 2012 to 2014, Shakira was allegedly in Spain while pretending to be in the Bahamas, according to the prosecution.

Since the accusations were made public, Shakira has denied any role in them, according to E! News.

As per her team, "Shakira has consistently fulfilled her tax obligations in every country where she has worked, even during the period between 2011 and 2014."

The site claims that Shakira coughed up the cash and reimbursed them as soon as she found out about the alleged tax avoidance.

The artist paid down her obligations, but the case went to trial in 2021 because the court determined there was "sufficient evidence of criminality," as reported by AP News.

Shakira might have to serve time in prison if the case went to trial.

Prosecutors were asking for an eight-year prison term and a fine for the musician, according to NPR.

In around ten minutes, what could have been a protracted legal battle came to an end.

Shakira was lucky to get out of jail after her court appearance.
